Emphasis: Sustainable Tourism Business Management and Sustainable Tourism Management of Protected Areas.
General objective of the master´s degree:
Objective: Form human resources capable of doing research, to recognize and integrate socioeconomic, political, cultural and environmental factors in the study of management of tourism; capable to design and execute solutions that will contribute to the sustainability of its development.
Specific objectives:
- Reinforce the development of sustainable tourism of regional, national and international areas from Cozumel, Quintana Roo’s coast and the Yucatan Peninsulato the Caribbean, through the action of the graduates of the program.
- Reinforce the definition and execution of formation programs for the research of problems in the management of tourism and related with their sustainable development, integrating economic aspects, of social equity, and respect of the environment, through the intervention of the graduates of the program.
- Respond to the educational demand to form professionals in research interested in the problems of sustainable management of tourism.
- Identify the current lines of research, propose and develop new lines relevant to the theory and practice of the sustainable management of tourism in regional, national and international areas.

Directed to:
Academics in the tourism area, undergraduates related to tourism, sustainable development, environmental engineering, natural resources management, biology and other related areas, and professionals in the tourism sector (enterprise and government).
Applicant´s profile
1. Knowledge
a) Knowledge obtained in the undergraduate level in any of the related areas of the program, that allows the applicant to identify social, environmental and/or economic problems in the sustainable management of tourism. The areas related to the program are: tourism, hospitality or gastronomy, sustainable planning and development, environmental and/or biological sciences, administration, management and development, economy, agronomic science and engineering and sociology, among others related to the sustainable management of tourism.
b) Knowledge of the scientific method to study problems related to sustainable development.
2. Abilities and attitudes
a) Capacity to infer, analyze, and synthetize logic-mathematic and verbal information.
b) Capacity to obtain, organize, understand and interpret methodological and computer based information and in English.
c) Interest and willingness to conduct a project of scientific research applied in the area of the sustainable management of tourism.
Graduation Profile
The graduate of the Master´s Degree in the Sustainable Management of Tourism will have the knowledge, ability and attitudes to identify, analyze, and diagnose the touristic problems of enterprises and organizations in a framework of sustainability, and to propose and conduct preventive and corrective measures to the problems.
At the end of his studies, the graduate has a disciplinary, technical and humanistic formation that will allow him to solve problems related to the area of the sustainable management of tourism.
Knowledge to
- Understand in a general manner the dimensions of sustainability in the social, economic, politic and environmental areas.
- Analyze, understand, and communicate the content of the documental information related to sustainable topics of touristic enterprises and touristic protected areas.
- Design and develop strategies for the design and management of sustainable touristic projects in the enterprise, as well as, regional areas.
- Design sustainable management systems of the touristic services of touristic enterprises and touristic protected areas.
- Project in a sustainable way the strategic development of touristic organizations.
- Design public policies for the recreational, touristic utilization of protected areas.
Capacity to:
- Identify, analyze and solve problems, as well as, to use methods, techniques and procedures that allow the sustainable management of touristic enterprises and the touristic utilization of protected areas.
- Communicate, discuss, and argue their ideas, demonstrating interest and sensitivity for the development of enterprise and regional problems, critical and analytically.
- Multidisciplinary, collective work, establishing sustainable management in tourism as a focal point.
Attitudes and values to:
- Serve professionally with ethics and sensitivity.
- Apply their knowledge professionally, with benefit in sustainable management for the conservation, good use, and responsible management of the resources, both in touristic enterprises and in the protected areas of touristic utilization.
Field of work
The field of work for the graduate includes, but is not limited to:
- Counseling and management positions in municipal, state or federal public sector organizations related to tourism.
- Counseling and management positions in touristic enterprises, national and foreign, that require experts for the conducting and counseling of strategic plans and the design and implementation of sustainable development projects.
- Colleges and civil associations with focus on sustainability.
- Public and private higher education institutions with programs in teaching, research, relation and management in the field of theprogram.
- Counseling organizations that conduct management and evaluation studies of the sustainability of the tourism activity in enterprises and protected areas.
- Nonprofit government and nongovernment organizations such as: federal, state, and municipal organizations that reinforce tourism and others related to tourism and the preservation of the environment.
